Hola a todos!

Que difícil empezar a escribir el primer blog, me cuesta poner en orden y por escrito todos mis pensamientos, acá va el intento:

En nuestras charlas con las otras “latinas” sobre las cosas que queremos poner en el blog, hablamos de que cada una cuente sus mejores experiencias viajando. Entre todas hemos viajado mucho; puede que alguna vez repitamos destino, pero cada una tuvo experiencias totalmente distintas en los mismos lugares, así que consideramos que tener distintos puntos de vista está bueno.

Cuando pienso en una de mis mejores experiencias, sin lugar a dudas, me viene a la mente nadar en las aguas llenas de plancton luminoso en la Península de Barú, en Colombia.

Fui en abril del 2017, con dos de mis mejores amigas en nuestro Viaje de los treinta, año en el que, también, celebramos 25 años de amistad.

Llegar a Barú

Se puede llegar de muchas formas, trasporte público, lancha desde Cartagena de Indias o lo que decidimos nosotras: un auto particular.

En el aeropuerto de Cartagena preguntamos cuánto salían los taxis oficiales hasta la estación de buses en Pasa Caballos (La zona del castillo), donde podíamos hacer trasbordo en otro vehiculo hasta la entrada a Playa Blanca (esa era la opción más barata por tierra).

Empezamos a hacer cuentas, y se nos acercó un hombre que nos dijo que desde ahí nos llevaba hasta la entrada de Playa Blanca en camioneta (Y nos dejaba pasar por el supermercado, 😅). No recuerdo el precio exacto pero fueron aproximadamente 90000 pesos colombianos por las tres.

Al llegar nos encontramos con una especie de escalera de piedras. Había gente con carretas que te ofrecían llevarte el equipaje. Es muy importante acordar el precio antes.

Nosotras estabamos muy cargadas, así que aceptamos pagar $25000.

Nuestro alojamiento era de los últimos, y la caminata fue larga bajo el sol del mediodia, por lo que decidimos darles una muy buena propina.

La mejor opción si tu alojamiento no está cerca de la entrada, es tomar una lancha, lo que hicimos a la vuelta.

La lancha – taxi, sale $5000 por persona. Nosotras le dimos $20000 en total, por las valijas y mochilas.

Hospedarse en Barú

La mayoría de la gente va a Barú en excursiones de un día que salen en lancha desde Cartagena de Indias. Yo les recomiendo 100% pasar la noche ahí.

La Isla (que en realidad es una península) no tiene electricidad, ni agua. Gracias a generadores eléctricos, y solo por la noche, hay luz.

Por las mañanas se pueden ver las lanchas que llegan con bidones de agua dulce y a los trabajadores de los hostales subidos a escaleras cargando los tanques manualmente.

Son estas las razones por las que la mayoría de la gente decide solo pasar el día en la Isla. Si podés pasar por alto el hecho de que hay que bañarse con agua no muy caliente (y que dura cinco minutos) y cargar tus equipos electrónicos solo de noche, Barú es una experiencia increíble.

Nos hospedamos en Nuestros Tres Tesoros. Lo recomiendo, la gente trabajando era de lo más cálida y amable. Las habitaciones quedaban en la planta alta y abajo había un restaurante. Ahi fue donde hicimos casi todas nuestras comidas los días que nos quedamos.

Pagamos US$112 COP 319.000 por dos noches, para las 3.

En la Isla hay un hotel, beach resort “all inclusive”: el Decameron. Está al final de la Playa Blanca, y si bien debe ser muy bonito adentro, creo que yendo a lugares así te perdés un poco de la esencia del lugar, pero esa es una opinión personal.

Por las mañanas llegaban en las excursiones los turistas que llenaban la playa y los restaurantes. Al hospedarnos ahi, por supuesto, podíamos hacer uso de las reposeras, sombrillas y mesas que los que iban solo por el día tenían que pagar.

Lo más lindo era cuando, alrededor de las 16hs, toda la gente se volvía a Cartagena. Entonces la playa quedaba prácticamente vacía. Solo veías pasar a algunos de los que, como nosotras, dormían en la Isla y los trabajadores acomodando todo para el día siguiente.

La playa en sí no es muy ancha, solo unos cuantos metros desde donde terminan los restaurantes y hostales hasta donde empieza el mar. Si te gusta hacer partidos de fútbol, voley o actividades que necesiten más espacio, puede que ésta no vaya a ser tu playa prefería.

Si lo que buscas es bañarte en aguas tibias o relajarte en la arena blanca con una cerveza y/o un libro en la mano a mirar un atardecer increíblemente hermoso, éste es tu lugar.

La primera noche, caminando por la playa llegamos a un barcito (que era una barra con mesas y sillas en la arena) con música Latina y gente bailando. Qué más se puede pedir que gente copada bailando en la orilla del mar? 😊 Nos quedamos ahí hasta tarde y después de intentar convencer a mis amigas que me dejen llevar a la habitación a un gatito que estaba perdido (en lo que fallé rotundamente), nos volvimos al hostel.

Plancton Luminoso

Una de las grandes atracciones de Barú es el plancton luminoso o fluorescente que se acumula en la bahía.

Para que sepan un poco más, éste fenómeno se llama bioluminiscencia. Es creado por un alga que cuando es agitada se hace luminosa. Se trata de un mecanismo de defensa, cuando movemos el agua el alga piensa que se trata de un crustáceo a punto de comérsela. Entonces lanza un destello con la intención de atraer a algún pez que pueda comerse al crustáceo.

La noche que hicimos la excursion tuvimos que caminar unos minutos por la playa hasta el lugar donde estaba la lancha. Había otro grupo de tres chicas, mis dos amigas y yo.

Después de un paseo de unos 15 minutos (que supongo que para las pobres chicas que iban con nosotras pareció más largo, ya que tuvieron que soportarnos cantando canciones de nuestra infancia) llegamos al lugar.

El hombre que manejaba la lancha nos señalaba una parte del agua donde se podían ver muuuuuy de vez en cuando algunos destellos luminosos. Mis amigas y yo nos miramos, pensando que, si eso era el famoso plancton, nos habían estafado; pero que de todas formas el paseo en lancha había valido los 20000 pesos colombianos que habíamos pagado cada una.

Fue cuando tiraron el ancla al agua que pudimos observar de qué se trataba en realidad ese fenómeno. Todo el ancla se iluminó de un color medio verdoso azulado.

Nos tiramos al agua, que estaba tibia. Cada movimiento provocaba esa luz fluorescente. Cuando sacabas las manos del agua parecía que pequeños destellos se escurrían. No voy a intentar describir cómo se veía, estar ahí en la noche, con las estrellas brillando sobre nosotras era, en una palabra, mágico.

Fue una de las experiencias más lindas que he tenido en mi vida, en parte porque la naturaleza me maravilla todo el tiempo y en otra porque tuve la suerte de compartirlo con dos de las personas más importantes que tengo.

Lamentablemente no tengo ninguna foto de esa excursión. Tuve en mi cabeza (con el arnés) todo el tiempo la cámara go pro, pensando que estaba haciendo un vídeo espectacular y que se iba a poder observar el fenómeno luminoso. El resultado fue un vídeo que salió todo negro en donde se pueden escuchar nuestras risas y cantos 😂 (si logro que me autoricen intentaré subir alguna parte)

Latinas Tips

Para terminar les quiero dar algunas pequeños consejos por si deciden ir a Barú:

-Llevar provisiones de comida y sobre todo mucha agua. Los precios pueden ser el doble que en Cartagena.

-Llevar repelente de mosquitos.

-Es mucho mejor ir durante la semana para evitar demasiada gente.

-Les recomiendo buscar alojamiento lejos de la entrada de la Playa Blanca, es mucho más tranquilo.

Barú, Colombia. (Luna🌙)

How difficult is to start writing the first blog, I find it hard to put all my thoughts in writing, here is the atempt:

In our conversations with the other “Latinas” about the things we want to put on the blog, we talk about each one writing our best traveling experiences. Between all of us we have traveled a lot; we may repeat in one article or two the destination, but each one had totally different experiences in the same places, so we consider that having different points of view is a good idea.

When I think of one of my best experiences, without a doubt it comes to my mind to swim in the waters with luminous plankton in the Peninsula of Barú in Colombia.

I went in April 2017 with two of my best friends in our Journey of thirty, a year in which, also, we celebrated 25 years of friendship.

Arriving in Barú

You can go there in many ways, public transport, boat from Cartagena de Indias or what we decided: a private car.

At the airport in Cartagena we asked how much an official taxi would cost to take us till the bus station in Pasa Caballos (the castle area), where we could change to another vehicle until the entrance to Playa Blanca (that was the cheapest option by land).

We were approached by a man who told us that from there he could take us to the entrance of Playa Blanca by car (and let us go through the supermarket, 😅).

I do not remember the exact price but it was approximately 90000 for all three.

Upon arrival there were people that offered to help you with your luggage. It is very important to agree on the price beforehand.

We had heavy backpacks, so we agreed to pay $25,000. Our hostel was the last one on the beach, and the walk was long under midday sun, so we decided to give them a very good tip.

The best option if your accommodation is not near the entrance, is to take a boat, what we did on the way back.

The boat – taxi, costs $ 5000 per person. We gave them $ 20,000 in total, for the suitcases and backpacks.

Sleeping in Barú

Most people go to Barú on a day trip that depart by boat from Cartagena de Indias. I recommend 100% to spend the night there.

The Island (which is actually a peninsula) has no electricity or water. Thanks to electric generators, and only at night, there is light.

In the mornings you can see the boats that arrive with fresh water and the hostel’s workers loading the tanks manually.

These are the reasons why most people decide to spend just a day on the island. If you can ignore the fact that you have to bathe with not very hot water (and that lasts five minutes) and charge your electronic equipments only at night, Barú is an incredible experience.

We stayed at the hostel Nuestros Tres Tesoros. People working there were extremly warm and friendly.

The rooms were at the top floor and downstairs there was a restaurant (which consisted of wooden tables and chairs in the sand) run by the same people. That’s where we did almost all of our meals the days we stayed there. We paid US $ 112 COP319,000 for two nights, for 3.

On the island there is a hotel, beach resort “all inclusive”: the Decameron. It’s at the end of Playa Blanca and although it must be very nice inside, I think that going to hotels like that one you lose a bit of the essence of the place, but that is a personal opinion.

In the mornings the boats arrived with tourists that filled the beach and the restaurants. Because we were staying at the hostel we could use the chairs, umbrellas and tables that those who were there just for the day had to pay.

The most beautiful thing was when, around 4pm, all the tourists returned to Cartagena. Then the beach was practically empty. You only saw some of those who, like us, slept on the island and the workers, accommodating everything for the next day.

The beach itself is not very wide, only a few meters from where the restaurants and hostels end up and where the sea begins. If you like to play football, volleyball or activities that need more space, this may not be your favorite beach.

If you’re looking to bathe in warm waters or relax in white sand with a beer and / or a book in your hands watching an incredibly beautiful sunset, this is your place.

The first night, walking along the beach we found a little bar with Latin music and people dancing. 😊

We stayed there until late, drinking and dancing on the shore.

We went back to the hostel after I tried to convince my friends to let me take to our room a kitten that was lost (in which I failed completely).

LuminousPlankton

One of the main attractions in Barú is the luminous or fluorescent plankton that accumulates in the bay.

This phenomenon is called bioluminescence. It’s created by an algae that when it is agitated becomes luminous. It’s a defense mechanism, when we move the water the algae thinks that it is a crustacean, their natural enemy. Then it creates a flash with the intention of attracting some fish that can eat the crustacean.

The night we did the tour we had to walk a few minutes along the beach to the place where the boat was. There was another group of three girls, my two friends and me.

After approximately 15 minutes (which I guess for the poor girls who were with us seemed longer, since they had to listening us singing songs from our childhood) we arrived at the place.

The excurstion man pointed out a part of the water where you could see a few flashes of light from time to time. My friends and I looked at each other, thinking that, if that was the famous plankton, we had been swindled; but that the boat ride had been worth the Colombian pesos that we had paid.

It was when they dropped the anchor into the water that we could see what this phenomenon was really about. The entire anchor was illuminated with a greenish-blue color.

We jumped into the water, which was super warm. Each movement caused the fluorescent light. Taking my hands out of the water seemed like little glimmers slipped away.

I will not try to describe how it looked, being there at night, with the stars shining above was, in a word, magical.

It was one of the most beautiful experiences I have had in my life, partly because nature amazes me all the time and because I was lucky to share it with two of the most important people I have.

Unfortunately I do not have any pictures of that boat trip. I had in my head (with it harness) the go pro camera, thinking that I was doing an spectacular video. The result was a video that came out all black where you can hear our laughter and songs (if I get authorized I’ll try to upload a fragment of it)

LatinasTips

To finish I want to give you some tips in case you decide to go to Barú: –

-Take provisions of food and especially a lot of water. The prices can be double than in Cartagena.

– Do not forget mosquito repellent.

-It’s better to go during the week to avoid the crowds of the weekend.

-I recommend looking for accommodation away from the entrance of Playa Blanca, it’s quieter.
